Where did the idea all begin? Lindy by the Lake started as an inside joke, complaints from East Bay folk about how we didn’t have our own version of the long-running and oh-so amazing Lindy in the Park in glossier, shinier San Francisco. A few dancer friends expressed frustration about crossing the Bay Bridge on a Sunday, and about how we should create something of our own, on this side of the bay.

That desire prompted us to talk to LitP organizer and friend, Kenneth over ping-pong and drinks one night. He said, it was really simple…”all you need is dancers and a boom box. The rest will figure itself out.” And that’s how it began.

Finding the perfect space around Lake Merritt was the challenge. Certain spots were claimed by other lakeside activities. We would have to work around the other many colorful offerings: Salsa by the Lake, capoeira and drum circles. After a few go-arounds the lake, it was settled that the landing by East 18th and Lakeshore Drive was perfect. It was out of the way from main foot traffic, but had enough exposure for other Lake Merritt goers to hear the music and see the dancing.

And that’s where it all started. Some crazy kids and a boom box.
